What are you going to do to make yourself stand out from the millions of people competing against you for the same role that you want? As good as you are, you are only as memorable as the next person who steps into the room. So what are you going to do to make yourself stand out and be chosen?

As you grow older and wiser, things become more challenging and competitive. How do you build on what you know and what you can offer? Just like in any other field, you have to keep learning, keep expanding, keep growing, keep reinventing yourself so that you don’t become last year’s news or an afterthought.

Dancers, young and old, you need to continue to learn and immerse yourself in new techniques, new styles, and color your dancing with the story of your life. That is something I learned from Alvin Ailey. Nothing is stale about the moments and days, hills, and valleys of your life. Stay true and connected to those moments, allow them to motivate your art, and you will be reinvented and reinvigorated with every performance. Pay attention to the details of yourself. Do not sit around and wait for the opportunity to fall into your lap. Prepare and perform at your highest level, consistently, even when you think no one is watching.

No one can compete with the uniqueness you bring to the marley. But you must bring something, all of it, and more. So, what are you going to do to stand out?
