The Athlete

I prayed each day that I would be brave enough to walk in the world as unapologetic as I was when I graced the stage. I was at the height of my brilliance. Who I became, was who the creator intended me to be; most focused, most centered and most sure.

Working with Annie Lebowitz was amazing. Once she achieved the look she wanted, including my makeup, nail color and outfit, she took only 10 minutes, to capture the image. I was thinking "Did she get it? Do I look good? Did she get my good side?” But when I saw the photo, I was blown away! And the icing on the cake was when she sent me a signed copy!

Omg!!! I love this dress. A week after this photoshoot, I was given the opportunity to wear it to the Ailey Gala.  I was so nervous that night. I didn’t want to tear anything or expose myself. The dress was so thin and delicate, which left little to the imagination as far as fabric goes. It made me feel like a star.

I remember sitting at dinner with friends when Judith Jamison whispered in my ear that she was working to get me on the cover of Dance Magazine. At the time, I was to be the second Black woman to grace the cover (her being the first). She told me I had to keep it a secret, but like always I would tell my mother and swear her to secrecy.
